Denver's historic Loretto Heights campus is undergoing a transformative renovation, with the centerpiece being the May Bonfils Stanton Theater. This initiative aims to establish a vibrant cultural hub in Southwest Denver, enriching the community with enhanced access to the arts.

A Brief History of Loretto Heights and Its Theater

Established in 1888 as an educational institution for women, Loretto Heights College expanded its facilities in 1963 to include the May Bonfils Stanton Theater. Designed by G. Meredith Musick, this 1,000-seat theater was, at the time, Denver's second-largest indoor performance space, following the Denver Auditorium Theatre.

The college ceased operations in 1989, transitioning through various educational uses until its closure in 2016.

The Vision for a Cultural Renaissance

In 2018, Westside Investment Partners acquired the 72-acre Loretto Heights campus with a vision to rejuvenate it into a cultural epicenter for Southwest Denver—a region historically underserved in terms of arts infrastructure. Central to this vision is the renovation of the May Bonfils Stanton Theater, spearheaded by Denver Arts & Venues (DAV).

Planned Renovations and Enhancements

The theater's renovation encompasses several key upgrades:

Accessibility Improvements: Ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by installing passenger elevators, wheelchair ramps, and widening seats.

Technological Upgrades: Modernizing lighting, audiovisual systems, and stage rigging to meet contemporary performance standards.

Infrastructure Overhauls: Replacing outdated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to enhance safety and efficiency.

To accommodate these improvements, seating capacity will be adjusted from 900 to 750, balancing comfort with preservation of the theater's historic essence.

Community Engagement and Future Prospects

Community involvement has been integral to the renovation planning, with multiple engagement workshops and surveys conducted to align the project with local aspirations. The overarching goal is to create a space that reflects the neighborhood's character and caters to the needs of artists and arts organizations.

The revitalized theater is poised to host a diverse array of events, from theatrical productions and musical performances to dance and comedy shows, fostering a vibrant arts scene in Southwest Denver. Councilman Kevin Flynn highlighted the project's significance, stating, "This theater renovation is the single largest city investment ever in southwest Denver."

Anticipated Timeline

The project is set to break ground later this year, with completion targeted for late 2027. The initial phase, estimated at $60 million, is funded through the city's 2021 RISE bond and the Denver Arts & Venues budget. Future enhancements, including a parking garage and further facility upgrades, are planned as additional funding becomes available.

The renovation of the May Bonfils Stanton Theater signifies a monumental step toward enriching the cultural fabric of Southwest Denver. By preserving this historic landmark and adapting it for contemporary use, the city not only honors its past but also invests in a vibrant, inclusive future for the arts.
